Girls Win 5th Straight County Relay Title
UC girls nearly record a perfect score, roll to 5th straight Union County Relay title
The Vikings scored a meet record 76 out of a possible 80 points
The Union Catholic girls track and field team produced the most dominant performance in meet history when the Vikings nearly recorded a perfect score and smashed a meet record en route to winning the Union County Relay title for the fifth straight year on Sunday at the Jersey City Armory.
The Vikings won seven of the eight events, including NJ #1 times in the shuttle hurdles and sprint medley relay, and racked up a remarkable meet record 76 points out of possible 80 on the way to a 76-29 victory over runner-up Rahway. UC broke the meet record of 72 points that they set last year.
UC won the shuttle hurdles in a NJ #1 32.12, the sprint medley in a NJ #1 4:10.66, the distance medley in 12:34.79, the 4×200 in 1:46.19, the 4×400 in a meet record 4:05.67, the 4×800 in 10:04.23, and the high jump at 10-0. The only event UC didn’t win was the shot put where the Vikings placed third, led by Sophia Martinez‘s 35-1 1/4, which was the second best throw of the meet.
Sophomore Leena Morant had a huge day for UC with a 2:15.0 800 anchor split in the SMR, and a 59.2 carry in the 4×400. Jerika Lufrano ripped a 5:05 to anchor the winning DMR team, and Angelique Williams cleared a meet best 5-2 in the high jump.
The Vikings, who now own the top times in N.J. this season in the shuttle hurdles, 4×400, 4×800, SMR amd DMR, will be heavily favored to repeat as champions at this Thursday’s Non-Public State Relay Championships at 4 p.m. the Bennett Center in Toms River.
