Fast Times at the Horse Farm!
Freshman phenom Paige Sheppard broke another state record to lead a flurry of red-hot performances by the Union Catholic track and field team at the Second Night At The Horse Farm on Tuesday at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft.
Sheppard, who already owned the state freshman girls records in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs, ran the 3,200 for the first time as a high school runner and added the state freshman 3,200 record to her resume with a winning time of 10:26.85, the third fastest tme in the state this season. The former state freshman record of 10:28.05 set in 2016 by Grace Dwyer of Nottingham. Sheppard ran 5:12.81 for the first 1,600 and closed in 70.0.
There were several other big UC highlights.
In the girls’ competition, senior Peyton Hollis led a 1-2-3-4-5 finish for UC in the girls 800 with a time of a NJ No. 3 time of 2:09.13. Sophomore Jimmiea King was second in a NJ No. 4 and personal best 2:09.77. Junior Taylor Aska won the girls 400 in a personal best 56.21, Abriyah Thompson won the 400 hurdles in 1:08.32, Senior Vonya Gould soared 18-0.25 to win the long jump, Kiara Flemig cleared 5-0 to win the high jump, and Isabella Murray finished first in the 200 in 25.99. Cayleigh Kaiser ran a 5:09.43 to finish a strong second in the 1,600.
On the boys side, senior Alex Saldana finished first in the 3,200 in 9:15.24, and junior Avery Atexide won the 200 in 22.61.
