UC girls break 3 school records, win 3 events at Blue Devil Classic
The girls won the shuttle hurdles, 4×100 and DMR
The Union Catholic girls tuned up for this week’s Penn Relays by winning three events and breaking three school records at the 30th Blue Devil Classic on Saturday at Gary Kehler Stadium in Westfield.
The Vikings captured the shuttle hurdles in a NJ #2 1:02.74, the 4×100 in a NJ# 3 48.69, and the distance medley relay in a NJ # 3 and school record 12:27.90. The old DMR school record of 12:33.09 was set last year. In addition to the DMR school record, the Vikings also broke school records in the three-person team discus and three-person team pole vault.
In the shuttle hurdles, senior Amaya Chadwick, who returned to the track earlier in the week after a hamstring injury sidelined her for most of the indoor season, led off in 14.0 to put the Vikings ahead to stay. Freshman A’Liyah Thomas had a strong 15.5 leg on the shuttles. Junior Khamil Evans had a strong meet for UC. She ran the third leg on the 4×100 and cranked out a 57.8 in the DMR. Also in the DMR, UC had splits of 3:50.1 from Leena Morant, 2:21.8 from Zamira Ysaac, and 5:17.2 from Jerika Lufrano.
In the discus, Christine Samuels (102-6), Bella Giacobbe (79-2), and Danielle Torres (63.3) combined for a school record 244-11, breaking the mark of 237-10 set in 2010. In the pole vault, Danielle Rappa cleared a school freshman record 7-6, and Hope Handlin and Isabella Gray also made 7-6 for a school record total of 22-6. Tyler Scott leaped a school senior class record 35-5 3/4 in the triple jump.
