Vikings Sparkle at County Championship!
The Union Catholic girls, led by double-winner Amaya Chadwick and Jerika Lufrano and Angelique Williams, ran away with its fourth straight title and the boys placed second at the Union County Championships on Saturday at the Jersey City Armory.
UC Olympian Sydney McLaughlin didn’t compete at the county meet because she’s in Boston running the 400 leg on an all-star distance medley relay that will attempt to break the world record on Saturday at 5:35 p.m.
Chadwick, a junior, won the 55-meter dash in 7.12 and the 55 hurdles in 8.00 to help lead the Vikings to an 87-34 victory over runner-up Cranford. Lufrano won the 1,600 (5:29.56) and was third in the 3,200 (12:18.79). Williams finished first in the high jump (5-4 and placed fourth in the hurdles.
Also for the UC girls, freshman Leena Morant also had a big day by placing second in the 800 (2:20.03) and third in the 400 (59.67).
In the boys competition, Union Catholic was led by Nate Papachristos, first in the 3,200 (9:47.30) and second in the 1,600 (4:31.90). The Vikings placed second to Elizabeth, 73 ½-56.
